Smelt dissolving tank explosions, resulting mainly from contact of insufficiently dispersed smelt with green liquor, have been problematic in kraft pulp mills for many years. While the root causes of these explosions have been documented, dissolving tank and recovery boiler design and operating practices have failed to eliminate these explosions.
