Pulps and microfibrillar suspensions can be characterized by permeability which can be determined from the hydrodynamic specific surface area and specific volume. A modified batch drainage test is analyzed to yield these parameters in a reproducible and robust manner. This technique is a modification of an earlier technique [1,2] and yields parameters independent of a compressibility measurement. The parameters are applied to determine the settling, drainage and filtration behavior of pulp and microfibrillar suspensions.
