Over the past decade, the use of stabilized-halogen programs has dramatically improved control of microbial growth and deposit formation in papermaking systems. However, papermaking systems are dynamic, freshwater treatment is variable, incoming raw materials can be contaminated, and tolerant populations can develop. Over-treating systems to compensate for variability can lead to undesirable consequences including corrosion and increased use of process additives. A lack of relevant, real-time data can lead to inefficient use of resources in an attempt to solve machine efficiency or product quality problems. Therefore, there remains a need for improved monitoring and analytical techniques to quickly identify the source or cause of microbial upsets for improved control.
