Recently the problem of oil migration from recycled board products into dry foodstuffs has been raised by Dr. Koni Grob of the Swiss Food Safety Laboratory and this has precipitated many studies in the area to overcome the problem. Solving the problem by replacing recycled board is counter to environmental policy and not realistic supply wise on a global scale. Therefore, an approach that prevents the mineral oils from transferring from recycled board into the food area, using a suitable barrier layer, has been used. One of the problems for this experimental work has been the lack of a quick test for migration that is reliable and representative. Whilst it is imperative that the final solution is tested correctly in a standardised way, such a lab test is essential for timely experimental iterations.
