Energy is a major cost component of all pulp and paper facilities. Electricity, natural gas, and fuel oils are significant costs, and should be a primary focus for overall cost reduction. Traditional methods have focused on steady-state energy consumption. New methods presented in this paper use process dynamics to discover, diagnose, and eliminate excessive energy consumption. The techniques are explained, and a case study is presented to show real-world financial benefits.
