Grade change transitions can be a significant production loss on a large percentage of paper machines worldwide. The demand to make quick and frequent transitions has continued to be a common requirement and future needs will only become greater. There are several different available control approaches that can be used to automate grade change transitions[1][2][3]. There are also documented methods to quantify grade change performance that can be used to point to areas that are under performing. With the combination of existing automated transitions and methods to quantify performance, several common issues have been identified.
