Basis weight is arguably the most important quality measurement in the paper industry. It is the primary cost driver for our industry. Basis weight variation affects cost directly, and also affects product value to the customer. Traditional methods to manage basis weight variability are time-consuming and require expertise to discover the root cause. New methods presented in this paper use oscillation analysis and process interaction analysis to discover, diagnose, and dramatically reduce variations in the basis weight. The techniques are explained, and a case study is presented to show real-world financial benefits. Up to 50% reduction in process variability may be achieved using these techniques.
