Use of electron irradiation for manufacturing thermomechanical pulp at the Technical University of Dresden has impressively validated in practical application the positive results regarding fibre quality and energy efficiency that were achieved in intensive laboratory trials (1), (2). Pulp was produced in a large-scale industrial trial using the new procedure with a specific energy input that was 30 % lower. This pulp, together with deinked pulp (DIP), was then used as a substitute for the classical TMP that had been used to date to produce newsprint. The newsprint was then subsequently printed and sold by a print shop without any loss in quality. Owing to the high energy efficiency of the manufacturing process, the new pulp was termed ETMP (for Energy-efficient TMP). Once successfully implemented, it could well make a decisive contribution to “carbon footprint” reduction in the paper industry.
