With the strengthening demand for viscose products, the ability to produce dissolving pulp with existing continuous cooking technology has experienced a renewed interest. In response to this revitalized demand a new process solution has been developed for manufacturing dissolving pulp grades with continuous cooking systems. Extensive laboratory trials were undertaken before the initial sale of the technology to insure success and avoiding the pitfalls of the prior continuous cooking processes. The first conversion of an existing bleached market kraft cooking system has now been successfully commissioned. Dissolving pulp quality has met market requirements within the first weeks of operation using auto-hydrolysis process. The new process design has minimized the previous negative experiences encountered with prior continuous cooking technology for dissolving pulp manufacture. Optional features included within the process provide selective byproduct recovery that can be further converted into chemical or energy products. Existing pulp mills do not forfeit the ability to revert to market kraft pulp production with the new process solution thus allowing for broader product portfolios and improved market flexibility.
