The word sustainability takes on different meanings depending on the context in which it is used, who uses it, and to whom it is directed. However, and perhaps more importantly, the question why the seemingly sudden ubiquitous and urgent need for sustainability is one we are examining here during the 2012 Tappi-Peers Conference. For purposes of this presentation, sustainability, as it pertains to the sourcing of raw material inputs and production of Next Generation Fiber (NGF), is identified as the latent opportunity that currently exists within the waste and recycling bins of coffee retailers across North America.
