A paper mill in the southwestern United States currently discharges all of its wastewater to a municipal wastewater plant for treatment. Prior to the discharge a cloth disc filter is used to reduce the total suspended solids loading to the lift station. The paper mill is expanding operations, which will double its current freshwater requirements and wastewater production. An alternative option was to consider reusing the wastewater to reduce the discharge fees paid to the municipality while reducing or perhaps eliminating the need for additional fresh water. Special attention was needed to ensure that the reuse water quality met the requirements for paper manufacturing. The wastewater from the paper mill consists of various solutes with traces of chemicals, including polymer, wet strength, dry strength and paper- making chemicals.
