Controlling Hydrochloric acid (HCl) and other acid gas emissions from utilities and industrials is gaining interest with boiler owners and operators, specifically those using coal and/or biomass, due to the recently proposed NESHAP (National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants) regulations for a number of industries. While Dry Sorbent Injection (DSI) of calcium based reagents is not a new technology, these new regulations are leading some to rediscover DSI as a viable low capital cost solution to acid gas control. This paper addresses DSI versus traditional FGD type systems, DSI equipment configuration and considerations, factors that are key in the effectiveness of DSI, as well as balance of plant issues that should be considered when contemplating DSI. A review of existing data on DSI performance and Lhoist North America’s trial work are presented. It can be concluded from this work that DSI using high quality hydrated lime can be an effective control option for some utility and industrial boilers in managing HCl and other acid gas emissions required by emerging regulations.
