Over the last 50 years ink removal from recovered paper slurries has become a key technology in paper and board recycling. The so-called de-inking processes have made decisive contributions to the environmental compatibility and helped substantially to secure the raw material basis of the whole paper and board industry. In industrial practice two applications have prevailed: washing and flotation de-inking. For a number of mainly economic reasons flotation de-inking today is by far the dominating technique all over the world. Both, however, achieve comparable results as far as pulp brightness is concerned, both generate high stock losses and both are operated at very low stock consistencies. It is in particular the latter criterion which renders either of them equally uneconomic, as by far the largest amount of the total energy input is consumed for transporting huge amounts of water.
