This paper reports mill results from using a cost-effective, amphiphilic (AMP) digester additive for the kraft pulping of eucalyptus wood. Trials with the multi-functional amphiphilic compound in combination with anthraquinone (AQ) afforded lower specific wood consumption (i.e., higher pulp yield), and lower pulp rejects than AQ alone when pulping to the same target kappa number. The product reduces eucalyptus brownstock extractives up to 30% without adverse impacts on pulp viscosity or pulp mill operations. It is proposed that the surface active nature of the AMP additive, which is stable under kraft processing conditions, facilitates the transport and impregnation of the cooking liquor into the chip interior, and extends delignification beyond that obtained by AQ alone. The mechanism by which AQ and the AMP additive lower wood consumption differ, but are complementary.
