An industrial flotation column was installed to selectively remove free organic extractives and extractive-laden fines from a portion of paper machine whitewater of a single -machine newsprint operation in April of 2011. This article reports the overall stability of the flotation column and the long-term impacts of whitewater decontamination on paper machine runnability and paper properties. Highlights of whitewater cleaning include a reduction in bleaching chemicals, an increased capacity for high extractives-containing species such as mountain beetle-killed pine and an increased throughput related in part to lower deposition problems. These gains were achieved with no detrimental effect on the paper physical and optical properties.
