The caustic area of most mills is notorious for the formation of calcium carbonate and sodium carbonate scale. This scale buildup often results in unscheduled down time, reduced through-put and equipment failure. The lines between the recovery boiler dissolving tank and the green liquor clarifier; buildup with scale that reduces the overall diameter of the lines. This results in reduced flow as well as increased velocity through the lines. Mills routinely alternate flows of green liquor and weak wash through the same lines in an effort to control scale. Generally the lines are cleaned by hydroblasting and/or with acid during annual outages.
