Over the last few years, a recognizable trend has emerged regarding higher screw speeds in single-screw extrusion. Several advantages, for both the process as well as with regard to practical/technical aspects, can be mentioned here, such as, for example, smaller machine size and the possible use of efficient direct drives due to a more convenient ratio of rotational speed to torque. An especially important concern in applications with high melt temperatures is the lower residence time due to the high output-to-(channel-)volume ratio. However, other characteristics of this approach must be also taken into account, since they include disadvantages as well, such as insufficient solid conveying or poor melting.
