Engineered effective void volume represents the proper use of venting in a paper machine roll cover. Venting can be in the form of drilled suction through holes (where holes are drilled through the cover and into holes in the roll shell), blind drilled holes (where holes are drilled into the cover at a depth less than the cover thickness), or grooves (channels cut spirally or circumferentially around the cover and across the face of the roll). Engineered effective void volume encompasses the proper use of suction through holes, blind drilling and grooves to reduce hydraulic pressures, increase moisture removal, develop sheet qualities, and enhance the performance of paper machine clothing. The form and amount of venting is dependent on press configuration, paper machine clothing, conditioning systems, accessory equipment, machine speed, roll cover material and hardness.
