In the last decade several companies have been actively developing and applying high throughput research (HTR) to increase speed to market and the probability of successful product introductions. HTR methods were originally developed by the pharmaceutical industry and then were quickly adapted by the chemical industry for screening of new catalysis. Recently HTR methods have been expanded to other research areas such as coatings to better understand how complex interactions between many components affect final properties. The HTR approach combines use of automated equipment in conjunction with sound experimental design principles, statistical modeling and data visualization tools. Rapid formulation and testing allows the interactions between formulation variables to be investigated in much more depth and breadth than has been possible in the past. This paper introduces the principles of HTR and shows how HTR has been used for architectural coatings research. Applying HTR to paper coatings is particularly challenging due to the porous nature of the substrate, thinness of the coatings, short drying times and difficulty of automating standard testing procedures. This requires that suitable proxy testing protocols be developed and/or adaptation of current HTR test methods.
