High-throughput research (HTR) in the chemicals and materials industries is establishing itself as a key enabler of better science, faster problem solving, and new products hitting the market more quickly. Early on it was clear that “materials informatics” must be an integral and indispensable element of the HTR paradigm in order to maximize the benefit of materials HTR. In concert with traditional capabilities in materials development, coatings application and formulation experience, statistical expertise, and market knowledge, the hardware and software employed in HTR represent a critical capability of leading materials suppliers to the coatings industry. This paper will focus on describing advanced computational intelligence modeling and analysis techniques that are useful as part of a HTR workflow to provide insight into the critical raw-material physical properties, chemical structures, and formulation interactions that drive performance in coatings.
