There is a continual need by the paper, coating, paint, and plastics to reduce manufacturing costs, energy consumption and carbon footprint. One common objective of all three is reduction of TiO2 usage, a major cost item in their manufacture process. The North America paper industry uses approximately 212,000(1) tons per year of TiO2 in both coated and uncoated grades. Of this, approximately 90,000 tons is used in coated paperboard grades. Some approaches the paper industry uses to help reduce their TiO2 cost is to find ways to bulk-up a sheet while at the same time reduce basis weight or use pigment extenders such as calcined clays, dye-back techniques or some combination of these while attempting to maintain or improve strength, optical, and print properties.
