Papermaking is a complex process and each machine is unique. Paper machine energy optimization is far more complicated than other parts of pulp and paper mills because there are so many components and grades involved. Improving energy efficiency requires careful evaluation of total machine operation. Significant energy savings can be realized on most paper machines by monitoring and benchmarking energy consumption and implementing cost effective changes. The average paper machine has energy consumption 20% higher than top performing machines. This paper describes use of paper machine energy scorecards for benchmarking energy performance and identifying opportunities for reducing energy use. The goal is to identify energy reduction projects that the mill can implement to reduce energy consumption. Mill personnel must be involved in the audit and agree to implement recommendations that are developed. Success depends on changes that are made to reduce energy use. Focus should be on projects that can be implemented without capital.
