This paper demonstrates the overall cost savings and energy efficiency of applying direct steam injection (DSI) to the whitewater and paper machine process streams. We examine DSI and other methods of heating whitewater and present the system designs used to incorporate this technology into your process. When applied correctly, it has reduced energy and fuel usage from 5% to 23% for many plants. Whitewater system audit calculations and sizing techniques will be presented along with a DOE vetted energy savings calculator to compare other heating methods to DSI. In addition, make-up water and mill fresh water heating systems are discussed. Mills and plants tasked with sustainability efforts may want to investigate this heating option for any process water application in the paper mill that can benefit from a consistent heated water supply. Mill case studies are presented showing quantitative savings in time-to-temperature, energy used, maintenance savings, and safety issues averted, using direct steam injection.
