Nonwoven fabrics are widely used as protective apparels and drapes such as for surgical gowns, isolation gowns, and surgical drapes, etc. because of their good liquid barrier properties and excellent breathability. There are four levels to classify the liquid barrier test and another four levels to classify the protective apparels and drapes based on ANSI/AAMI PB70:2012, “Liquid barrier performance and classification of protective apparel and drapes intended for use in health care and facilities.” Level 1 requires the water impact penetration test according to AATCC Test Method 42. Levels 2&3 require different levels of water impact penetration and hydrostatic pressure according to AATCC Test Method 127. Level 4 requires the pass of ASTM F1671, “Resistance to penetration by blood-borne pathogens using Phi-X174 bacteriophage, for surgical gowns, isolation gowns and other protective apparel.” For surgical drapes and drape accessories, level 4 requires the pass of ASTM F1670, “Resistance to penetration by synthetic blood.”
