The spectral contents of a scan measurement contain variations in machine direction (MD), cross-machine direction (CD) as well as random noise. The MD variations may include both low and medium-high frequency contents. A new technique that utilizes spectral analysis to separate several variations is discussed in this paper. The root causes of the separated medium-high temporal frequencies can be traced back to machine issues such as roll vibrations or other device malfunctions. This paper includes analysis of actual mill data to illustrate the technique and its applications.
