On a paper machine, the press section offers the last opportunity to remove liquid water from the freshly-formed cellulosic web. Any water leaving the last press with the web must be evaporated using a large amount of energy. Thus efficient pressing reduces the production costs. The drier sheet is stronger and therefore good water removal is also important for good machine runnability. The essential function of pressing is to improve the final product properties such as strength, smoothness and print quality. In this presentation we will review the effect of various pressing parameters on water removal and sheet properties. The objective is to provide a good understanding of pressing operation, which a practitioner could use to make rational decision about press section selection and operation.
