Paper machine rolls are subjected to fatigue loading during normal operation. Reliable and safe service can be achieved as long as the stresses in the roll components are below the endurance limits for the material of construction. Inspections of many types of rolls are routinely conducted to ensure that no damage has occurred that could lead to overloading the roll. Paper machine dryers are one example of rolls methodically inspected at regular intervals to reveal the presence of damage that affects the reliability and safety of the dryers.
