Softer and More Push Yankee Dryers to the Edge, Tissue360º Spring/Summer 2013
Yankee dryers on today’s tissue machines are being pushed harder and further than ever before by a combination of complex market and production demands that can be simplified into just a couple of general terms or categories—“softer” and “more.” As Sam Archer, senior industry technical consultant with Nalco and a member of the TAPPI Yankee Dryer Safety and Reliability (YDS&R) Committee, noted during a recent discussion with Tissue360o, “the marketplace is asking for higher and higher quality products, and in response, technology has found ways to push especially older machines out near the edge of their operating windows. Sometimes too near the edge, they will fall over into an area where the process in unstable, to a place where they weren’t designed to go.
