Traditional Contacting Caliper Sensors for thickness measurement of paperboard require constant maintenance for continuous operation due to dirt build-up and damage from holes, sheet breaks and “stickies”, especially with recycled stock. A new caliper sensor introduced in 2011 to the paperboard market is completely non-contact and uses a combination of Triangulation Laser and Eddy Current sensor measurements to provide 0.2 mil (5 micron) repeatability with no color or sheet flutter sensitivity. This new sensor does not require any intensive maintenance. Technical details of the sensor design as well as long-term field results are presented.
