Accurate paper defect detection, imaging and identification play a crucial role in root cause tracing, processimprovement, and quality control process. Today’s increased quality and runnability demands combinedwith high paper machine speed requires ever increasing performance from the web imaging system camera,signal processing, and illumination technology. Detection performance and image quality of the webimaging depend on many factors – all of which need to be correctly addressed to achieve high levelperformance. The main factors include sensor type, pixel resolution, quality of the illumination, andadvanced signal processing methods. In this paper we show how modern web imaging system addresses allthe above factors by utilizing high speed CMOS digital imaging sensors, efficient controllable LEDillumination, and sophisticated automated signal correction and detection algorithms.
