The effect of different pre-commercial and commercial fibrillated cellulosic additives on paper strength properties was investigated in this work. The goal was to study the physical properties of paper and board when using the fibrillated cellulosic additives in paper board samples made of bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP). The results showed that the addition of only a few percent of fibrillated cellulosic additives into pulp furnishes improved the paper and paperboard wet and dry strength 20-70%. Characteristics of nanofibrils from bleached bagasse pulp were studied in addition to commercial additives. The results support our view that non-wood materials can also be viable options for producing cellulose nanofibrils and can improve paper and paperboard strength properties. Future fiber products containing cellulosic nanomaterials (CN) as reinforcing components are attractive and the results reported in this presentation are interesting from an industrial point of view.
