Polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) provides good oil and grease-barrier but is too water sensitive for grease-barrier coatings onto paper and paperboard by itself. Ethylene copolymers require capital intensive processes and/or handling of various chemicals to make into water dispersions. A new fluorine-free ionomer has been developed that readily disperses in hot water with moderate agitation at atmospheric pressure with no surfactants or additives. Experiments show that when combined with PVOH solutions, the ionomer dispersion provides a tailorable platform for product performance: PVOH rich coatings have high Kit values at moderate coat weight and ionomer rich coatings provide excellent heat seal performance with moderate grease resistance. The ionomer rich coatings are non-blocky and crease resistant. Experiments at Western Michigan University show that the coatings are repulpable. Applications for non-fluorine grease-barrier paper are being explored.
