A new approach to developing strength in recycled tissue and towel grades using a cellulase enzyme-based product is yielding beneficial results. The use of cellulases to develop strength in virgin fiber is well documented; however, its effectiveness in recycled papers has proven to be more challenging. Recycled tissue manufacturers know that strength, drainage and downtime issues are common when using this type of furnish. This is mainly due to the presence of lower quality fibers in recycled furnish that are not only shortened but also contaminated with stickies, which lowers the overall fiber reactivity. This latest product development combines a proprietary base enzyme with a functional polymeric additive that controls contamination downstream and allows better access of the enzyme to the fiber surface for fibrillation.
