Creping is a critical process for achieving desired tissue sheet properties and at the same time optimizing tissue machine runnability. However, selecting an effective creping chemical program is often challenging due to the presence of a large number of process variations including Yankee dryer properties, sheet grade properties, and the choice of wet end functional chemicals. Kemira has developed a novel, patent pending, non-conventional PAE adhesive which performs well under a wide range of process conditions. This new adhesive is highly rewettable and also highly insoluble when brought into contact with water. Under medium to high temperature creping conditions, it produces a soft but durable Yankee coating layer that makes intimate contact with the wet paper web at the pressure roll nip. Under low temperature creping conditions, the new adhesive can be applied as part of an adhesive dialing (Dial-A-CoatTM) program, which utilizes a combination of adhesives having complimentary properties to achieve fast on-machine optimization. Case studies and laboratory data will be presented to demonstrate improved creping efficiency and sheet attributes.
