A creative solution for large Yankee applications, PaperCon 2014
In the past few years, steel Yankees have become accepted as a key standard component for tissue and
specialty paper machines. The main advantages of safety, energy efficiency, improved runability and quality
have shown to be significant improvements over the previous cast designs. It is therefore no surprise that
large producers not only order them for their new lines, but for the existing machines (rebuilds) as well.
There seem to be no limits regarding Yankee sizes in the manufacturing process, it is the transportation of
the final unit that restricts size and efficiency visions. Narrow streets, tunnels, as well as transport weight
regulations, limit manufacturers in their possibilities. With a unique concept that enables the final assembling
at the mill, there really seems to be no limits regarding Yankee size. Based on the recent example shown in
this paper, the world’s largest steel Yankee (22 ft. diameter) and the associated technical concept will be
explained in detail.
