This paper reports on the utilization of a laboratory flexo print press in the development of the coating formulation for a single coated liquid packaging board (LPB) grade, to constitute a new quality below the current double coated standard. Extensive pilot coating trials were conducted to evaluate different pigment and binder combinations for single coating, comparing these to a double coated reference. Results from pilot-scale coating, lab characterization of the coated board, as well as laboratory- and full-scale flexo print trials are presented and discussed in the paper.
