With an increased production, the counter current wash in the digester usually has to be reduced and many digesters run with a negative dilution factor. In these cases additional washing is needed. When an additional washer is added the concentrations of COD and dissolved solids in the filtrates circulating between the digester and the new wash stage, increase. The location of the new washer may have a small impact on the final wash loss but can have a big impact on the COD and dissolved solids circulating in the system. To prevent these concentrations from reaching critical levels and affect the operation of drum washers (filters), screen room and oxygen delignification careful consideration must be paid to where the new washer is added.
