Microstickies could deposit on both paper machine and paper products, especially after agglomeration under shocks in ionic strength, pH, temperature and chemical additives. These stickies would increase the down time of paper mill and decrease the quality of paper. The most important property of microstickies is the small size, leading to low removal efficiency and difficulties in measurement. Thus the increase of microstickies size could improve both removal and measurement. Currently there are a lot of methods to induce agglomeration, including shear stir, cold storage, exposure to reduced pressure, aeration and boiling treatment. In this paper, a new agglomeration technology based on electric field is investigated. The synergetic effect between electric field treatment and detacky chemicals/dispersants, including polyvinyl alcohol, poly(diallylmethylammonium chloride), lignosulfonate, are also studied.
