The recommended maximum diameter for M-EXTRA bricks have since the early nineties been 4 meters. Recent studies performed in United Kingdom have determined that the static stress on the moler (diatomaceous earth) insulating bricks will not reach critical levels, even when installed in larger diameter kilns. The proven environmental and economic benefits of dual lining design would also serve in larger diameter rotary kilns. Energy savings of up to 40% is not uncommon for a lime recovery kiln compared with a single layer lining design.
