Using finite element modulation and extensive material testing this paper seeks to find, under which conditions M-EXTRA (diatomaceous insulating brick) can be used in large diameter lime recovery kilns. The increasing demands for lime in pulp production and development in lime recovery kiln design, gives a new challenge when planning the refractory lining design in the kiln. Previous recommendations for dual lining design are pressed by new design standards where kilns with a diameter above 16 feet is not uncommon anymore.
