The capacity of recovery boilers have increased rapidly during recent years. At the same time, nominal furnace loading has increased significantly. And this trend seems to continue also in the future. Changes in the air system design and increasing dry solids contents have increased the lower furnace temperatures, which in turn increases the dust loading. Dust load and dust properties in kraft recovery boilers vary to a large extent depending on furnace conditions and black liquor properties. The role of furnace conditions on dust formation chemistry in kraft recovery boilers is relatively well understood today, but operational data is still needed for design purposes.
