The purpose of this paper is to provide the product and applications development engineer a creative tool in meeting challenging performance requirements. Often, the desirable set of physical properties required for various applications are found in materials that have poor melt processing characteristics and may be overlooked or are diluted in blends with materials having poorer properties. For instance, LDPE, which inherently has high melt strength resulting from its highly branched structure is blended with LLDPE, HDPE and PP, all linear polyolefins, to improve melt processability. This technique has been used for many years in extrusion coating with polypropylene to reduce neck-in, improve drawability (higher draw rates & ratios) and improve coat weight uniformity.
