Accelerated metal wastage due to the flow induced corrosion has been reported in a number of pulp mill areas including digesters, flash tanks, white liquor clarifiers, evaporators, pipes, pumps and other pulp mill equipment. In recent years, a number of process related changes in the pulp mills, like the increase in black liquor solids and an increase in the sulfidity and alkalinity of pulping liquors have contributed to the accelerated corrosion in these equipment, while in certain parts of pulp mills the accelerated corrosion is also due to the combined action of local high flow rates along with the increased corrosivity. Presence of suspended solids in a certain process stream may accelerate the metal wastage even further.
