The main purposes of brownstock washing are to remove dissolved organic and inorganic substances that would contaminate the pulp during subsequent steps in the process and to recover the maximum amount of spent chemicals with the minimum dilution. Efficient washing improves the recovery of spent chemicals, reduces the consumption of reagents in the subsequent bleaching, and reduces the load on the evaporators. The pressures facing pulp mill management today in balancing quality, production and cost concerns are growing and the result is the evolution of new technologies that provides an opportunity to make vast improvements in the washing efficiencies of the process. One such area involved the foam control and drainage aids used in the brownstock washing process.
