In a typical pulp and paper mill, the majority of steam generated is to support the process. Typically, the steam produced is delivered through a network at different pressures to the various steam consumers. The primary requirement from the steam network controls is to ensure required steam quality and availability while maintaining overall energy efficiency. Unfortunately, consumption or production disturbances can be quite sudden and large in magnitude with very little advance warning. In such cases, traditional steam network controls compromise on overall energy efficiency in an attempt to secure steam quality and availability.
