Sugar maple (Acer saccharum), white birch (Betula papyrifera) and aspen (Populus tremuloides) are three hardwoods that are widely used by the North American pulp and paper industry. Due to their abundance, these species are also likely to be utilized by some of the biorefinery processes that are being developed. It is well established that the syringyl to guaiacyl (S/G) ratio of a hardwood lignin is a key if not dominant parameter regarding the ease of delignification (EOD) of that species.
