Energy represents one of the biggest costs for the production of pulp and paper, making the reduction of this expense a continuous target for pulp and paper mills in order to increase their competitiveness. One potential way to lower energy costs is through the utilization of lower cost opportunity fuels such as refuse derived fuels, sludges, agricultural wastes, etc. However, these fuels are associated with constituents that can cause difficulties in combustion systems in the form of lower plant availability through disturbances such as higher corrosion, erosion, or slagging. This paper describes boiler design considerations for new and existing units to enable successful utilization of lower cost opportunity fuels through examples of existing mills such as Stora Enso’s Maxau mill in Germany.  Stora Enso installed a new circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler to enable the utilization of multiple fuels in a single unit. The installation enabled the mill to reduce reliance on purchased power, thereby saving 40% on every MW generated.
