Hemicelluloses are long chain carbohydrate polymers bearing hydroxyl and carboxylic groups which associate with hydrophilic solvents. Hemicellulose is a green substitute for petroleum based polyols and is a non-food based substitute for starch polyols. It also has potential to be a byproduct of a well established and prolific paper industry, with a possibility to be available in large quantities. We have demonstrated in previous research that hemicellulose can be harvested from wood and grasses with high yields and relatively high molecular weight. Herein it is demonstrated that the hemicellulose can be crosslinked with zirconium to make a gel that when dried is largely insolubilized, somewhat water resistant, and can be used for coatings, adhesives and the like.
