Ever since stainless steels were introduced, the pulp and paper industry has been one of the most important users of the material. Several stainless steel grades have been developed especially with the aim of solving corrosion problems within this particular industry. Type 304L and 316L austenitic stainless steels have, in the past, been the dominant construction materials for equipment in pulp and paper processes. Today, more new equipment in the pulp mill is manufactured using duplex materials. This includes digesters, used for the cooking of the chips under alkali conditions, as well as reactors in the oxygen delignification and bleaching processes, which work under both alkali and acid process conditions. Duplex material is also increasingly used in the fabrication of non-pressurized vessels and tanks, as well as in main process equipment. Duplex stainless steels offer several advantages over common austenitic stainless grades like 304L, 316L and 317L. These advantages include superior corrosion resistance in pulping liquors, high mechanical strength, wear and erosion corrosion resistance, and excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
