Cogeneration in pulp and paper mills can provide significant financial and technical benefits to the operation. As steam infrastructure is readily available, pulp and paper mills are excellent candidates for the integration of such facilities. Using case studies from experience in retrofits, capacity expansion, and replacement projects including steam turbine generators, this paper provides mill management and decision makers with an overview of key considerations for a successful integration. The important aspects of the electric utility interconnection process, technical and nontechnical considerations, project scheduling, and challenges experienced in past cogeneration projects will be discussed.
